The letter L has always been green to me. And P tastes funny.

L and R feel like water, a cool and babbling brook, so when I started studying linguistics and found out their phonetic classification is “Liquid,” I had to laugh. Someone had the good misfortune to have a brain like mine.

When I was a kid, I created this piano composition in the key of C minor that I was constantly revising as the years wore on. I never named it, but I always referred to it as the black and yellow song, the colors I saw when I played it.

I could dramatically change the color just by taking the flat off the E note and transposing the song to C major. Then it was like a bright and sunny suburban yard. I could even hear lawnmowers in the background and smell the stale white noise of boredom.
